Onderzoek in Historische Theologie
De vakgroep Historische Theologie vertrekt binnen haar onderzoek vanuit twee recente ontwikkelingen, de groeiende waardering voor de patristiek in de evangelische beweging en de recente herwaardering van de middeleeuwse en protestantse scholastiek. Beide invalshoeken dragen bij tot een beter verstaan van de Reformatie en haar relatie tot de Moderne Tijd.
Aan de vakgroep zijn twee onderzoeksinstituten verbonden, die beiden in 2008 zijn opgericht om lokaal en internationaal onderzoek te stimuleren. Het Research Center for Early Christianity (RCEC) is opgericht in samenwerking met de vakgroep Nieuwe Testament en richt zich met name op onderzoek naar het pre-Chalcedonische christendom (vóór 451 A.D.). Het Institute of Post-Reformation Studies (IPRS) verricht onderzoek naar de Vroegmoderne Tijd met als focus post-Reformatie studies. Bijzondere aandacht gaat uit naar de middeleeuwse scholastiek van de 13e en 14e eeuw (Bonaventura, Thomas van Aquino, Johannes Duns Scotus) en haar doorwerking in latere theologie. Voor de 16e en 17e eeuw (protestantse orthodoxie en scholastiek) wordt samengewerkt met het werkgezelschap Oude Gereformeerde Theologie. Jonathan Edwards’ theologie (18e eeuw) wordt bestudeerd in samenwerking met het Jonathan Edwards Center van Yale University.
De vakgroep heeft ook een traditie van onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van de evangelische beweging en protestantse kerken in Vlaanderen en Nederland in de 19e en 20e eeuw. Hiervoor is een samenwerking met Evadoc uitgewerkt.
