Institute of Post-Reformation Studies
Het Institute of Post-Reformation Studies (IPRS) wil academisch onderzoek naar de Vroegmoderne Tijd na de beginfase van de Reformatie (±1550 tot ±1800) stimuleren, en daarmee de ETF helpen haar missie – het verdiepen en versterken van de internationale evangelische beweging – te volbrengen.
Post-Reformatie-onderzoek is met name relevant voor deze missie aangezien in de genoemde periode de klassieke theologische denkwijzen geconfronteerd werden met de Verlichting. In tegenstelling tot de Verlichting als veel bestudeerd onderwerp, wordt onderzoek naar de protestantse orthodoxie doorgaans veronachtzaamd. Dit is deels te wijten aan het feit dat de vroegmoderne universiteit in haar academische discours nog steeds de scholastieke methode volgde zoals die was ontwikkeld sinds de oprichting van de universiteit in de Middeleeuwen (±1200). Dit internationale en interconfessionele discours volgde in haar discussie met de Verlichting de lijnen van de Augustiniaans-Franciscaanse traditie en de Reformatie. Onderzoek naar de periode die volgde op de Reformatie is onmisbaar voor een goed begrip van de historische wortels van de internationale evangelische beweging.
Het instituut legt de nadruk op onderzoek (masterprojecten, PhD-projecten, publicaties), maar geeft ook voldoende aandacht aan op onderzoek gebaseerd onderwijs op masterniveau (de cursussen “History of Christian Doctrine” en “Medieval and Post-Reformation Scholasticism”) en diensten aan het breder academisch publiek (bv. conferenties).
