New Master of Teaching Program at ETF Leuven
Evangelische Theologische Faculteit (ETF) in Leuven will offer a new Master’s Degree program starting September 2021: the Master of Teaching in Religion. This Master of Teaching program is aimed at training teachers of Protestant-evangelical religion in the second and third grades of secondary education in Flanders.
For many years, ETF Leuven has been training teachers of Protestant Evangelical religion through the Specific Teacher Education (SLO) program. The new Master of Teaching in Religion replaces this SLO. In addition, the program also meets the need to study theology in relation to educational contexts in church, education and society. Another strength of the Master of Teaching program at ETF Leuven is that it is internationally oriented and not affiliated with a specific church or denomination.
With the addition of this program, ETF Leuven will offer two Master’s Degree programs starting academic year 2021-2022: the two-year Master’s Degree program in Theology and Religious Studies (Master of Arts, 120 credits) and the Master of Teaching in Religion (Master of Science) with a size of 90 credits.
Rector Prof. Dr. Jos de Kock: “With the introduction of the Master of Teaching in Religion into our educational offerings and the launch in mid-2020 of our research institute ISREYM (Institute for the Study of Religious Education and Youth Ministry), ETF Leuven invests in connecting theology with issues of faith and a new generation.” As a religious educator and professor of Practical Theology, Jos de Kock will work to ensure that the Master of Teaching program, the research institute, and current developments in the field of education and church youth ministry interact well.
Academic Dean Prof. Dr. Andreas Beck: “By offering a fully-fledged Master of Teaching program, we want to be ready, as a sustainable educational institution at university level, for the current and future challenges surrounding the training of teachers for religious education in Flanders and beyond.”
