Teacher Training
The specific teacher training program (SLO) is a one-year DEGREE program (in Dutch) leading to the degree of teacher. The program consists of a theoretical and a practical component (internship) of 30 credits each.
The specific teacher training program is linked to the Master of Arts in Theology and Religious Studies program. The theoretical component can be entirely integrated within the specialization Religion and Education. This means you can start the SLO during your Master’s program, or you can follow it thereafter. By law, you cannot receive your degree of teacher until you have finished your Master’s program.
When you have obtained your Master’s and teacher’s degree, you can work as a teacher of Protestant and Evangelical religious education.
ETF Leuven is currently working on development of an Educational Master that trains teachers for Protestant and Evangelical Religious Education (PEGO) at the upper secondary level (2nd and 3rd grade) in Flanders. This program will replace the current SLO as of the academic year 2021-2022.
The Educational Master consists of substantive courses in the field of theology and in the pedagogical-didactical field, and practical internships in secondary education. By means of a thesis track you will also become proficient in conducting research. The substantive courses, internships, and thesis track are organized in parallel in such a way that you as a student play an active role in the learning process.
The total scope of the Educational Master’s is 90 ECTS, excluding 15 ECTS of a preparatory program in the Bachelor’s phase (orientation internship and introduction to subject didactics).
